Two copies of Others Magazine Volume I in deep red, editorial design by The Newton Agency for Parallel Editions

Others Magazine is built on conversations with photographers about how they actually see. After five print issues it came back as a book, fourteen photographers in one volume, published by Parallel Editions.

SITUATION

Others has always been interviews first. Photographers talking plainly about light, about instinct, about the day nothing happens and the day everything does. After five print issues it returned as a book rather than a magazine, fourteen photographers gathered into a single volume published by Parallel Editions. A book asks more of its design than a magazine does, because people keep it. It sits on a shelf and gets pulled down again, and it has to still look right in five years.

DIAGNOSIS

What makes Others worth reading is that the photographers sound like themselves. Riverola saying the most creative she gets is when nobody gives her direction. That kind of honesty is easy to design over. Push the house style too hard and every voice starts to sound like the magazine instead of the person, and the thing that made the interviews worth printing quietly disappears into the layout.

DECISION

Build the book around the conversation rather than around the images. The interviews carry it, so the typography had to be the steady element, calm enough to read for an hour and confident enough to hold its own sitting between two photographs. The photography sets the pace and the type holds the line. The interview pages became the one place the book gets to speak in its own voice instead of the photographers', and that is where the original artwork lives.
