The ChatGPT Brand Strategy Problem: Don't Build Yours in a Chatbot

It is happening right now, in a browser tab, at eleven at night. A founder types build me a brand strategy for my coffee brand and fifteen seconds later there is a positioning statement, a target audience, a value proposition, three tagline options, and a color palette. It looks finished. It reads like something an agency would hand over. That is a ChatGPT brand strategy: finished-looking, and hollow underneath.

It is AI slop. And it will make your brand forgettable.

Here is what is actually happening under the hood. A ChatGPT brand strategy is built by sourcing everything the model can find and returning the middle of it. The average. The most common pattern across the entire dataset. That is the whole mechanism. It finds what appears most often and hands it back with confidence.

The average of every brand that has ever existed is bland by definition.

Why a ChatGPT Brand Strategy Sounds Like Everyone Else

Ask AI for strategy and you are asking it to flatten. To find the safest answer that would offend no one and excite no one. That is not a flaw in the tool. That is the tool working exactly as designed.

So the positioning comes back generic. The audience description fits ten thousand companies. The value proposition could belong to anyone selling anything. The tagline is forgettable on purpose, because forgettable is what the middle sounds like.

And you already know you do not want that. You did not start this because you wanted to be the median option in your category. You started it because you saw something missing and decided to build it. That instinct is the opposite of average.

But here is the trap. You know what you are building. You do not know how to turn it into strategy. You do not know what questions to ask yourself, what holes need filling, or what structure has to sit underneath the idea so it can actually carry an aesthetic, a story, a point of view worth following.

So you open ChatGPT, get something that looks complete, and tell yourself it is close enough.

It is not close. It is pointed in the wrong direction entirely, and every design decision you make on top of it inherits that.

What AI Cannot Do

AI has no discernment. It has no taste. It has never made a thing, shipped it, watched it fail, and learned why. It cannot hear the thing you are not saying. It cannot catch the story you are burying in a throwaway sentence. It cannot know why this brand and not some other one.

An artist can.

When I started building brands I never handed over a logo suite and walked away. There was always art direction, a visual world, systems that could actually be built on. I knew from the beginning that you needed content, touchpoints, depth. Ten years later that is more true, not less. The market got louder. The brands that break through are the specific ones.

AI will never ask you why red instead of orange. It will not ask about the decade that shaped how you see. It will not ask what community you are building or what it feels like to belong to it. It cannot ask anything that matters, because asking the right question requires knowing what is at stake.

Skip those questions and you are building on guesses. Guesses produce indecision, second-guessing, and a brand that stays flat no matter how much you spend on execution. You end up with beautiful design sitting on top of slop, and the design cannot save it.

Every founder who skips discovery hits the same wall, whether they skipped it with AI or with an agency that just ticks boxes. They cannot decide. They do not see the value in what they got. They cannot explain what they are selling or why anyone should care.

Brand Depth Is the Whole Game

Magazine on a speckled floor beside white chairs, cover reads BRANDING on subscription with bold geometric shapes.

Real strategy has depth because a real brand needs it to stand up.

Depth in discovery, so you actually understand what you are building. Depth in positioning, so you are not fighting the market, you are owning an edge inside it. Depth in strategy, brand and marketing both, so every decision after it builds on something solid. Depth in creative direction, so your art direction comes from your point of view instead of somebody else's board.

All of that gets executed through design, content, and every touchpoint a customer ever meets. It has to be there underneath or the whole thing comes apart the first time you try to scale it.

When I build a brand I am asking the questions an artist asks, not the ones on an agency intake form. I am trying to see what you see clearly enough to paint the picture in my own head. That picture becomes your brand.

That is why we built the Guided Brand Strategy.

The Guided Brand Strategy Is Discovery Done Right

The GBS is eighty-plus questions across story, offer, audience, taste, positioning, and voice. You answer in your own words, on your own schedule, in a private workspace. Pour a glass of wine and talk your idea out on a Tuesday night. No three-hour discovery call, no performance, no rushing to sound smart.

We read every answer ourselves. Humans, not software. Then we build your Strategic Foundation: brand positioning, market positioning, target audience avatar, brand avatar, brand voice, core value proposition and messaging, and SEO foundations.

If you carry it into DESIGNFLOW, month one turns that foundation into your Brand Activation Map. Not a static manual you read twice and never open again. A living document you can go into any day and see your own brand: what exists, why it exists, what it means, and how the pieces connect.

That is the difference between a ten thousand dollar brand manual and a working tool. One of them sits in a folder. The other one you actually use.

Why This Matters for Founder-Led Brands

This is the flow that built The Newton Agency. The GBS is how I do what I do. The aesthetic we hit, the depth underneath it, the way our brands feel layered instead of decorated, none of that happens without the strategy sitting under it first.

Every client who walks through our door fills it out. Every one. The ones who try to skip it, with AI or otherwise, always land in the same place. Indecisive. Unable to see the value. Marketing constantly because the branding never did the work for them.

Branding is about attracting people without yelling at them. It is building something so coherent and so specific that people want to be inside it. That takes depth. That takes the right questions asked by someone who has made things. That takes an artist, not an algorithm.

Use AI to get unstuck. Use it to organize a messy thought at midnight. Just do not hand it the one decision that everything else in your brand will be built on top of.
